- Note: The ventricular fold vibration is named ‘distortion’ in for example Complete Vocal Technique, but otherwise in other methods / techniques / pedagogies. For example, the term “false cords scream” is quite common within the metal scene.
Asian and African throat singers combine ventricular fold oscillation and according to some scientists (Sven Grawunder) also aryepiglottic sphincter oscillation with regular vocal fold phonation to achieve a one octave lower note with more overtones in the overtone singing ambitus. This is called ‘kargyraa’ in Tuva, ‘charchiraa’ in Mongolian, ‘uzlyau’ in Bashkir, ‘khai’ in Chakassic and ‘umngqokolo’ in South-Africa (Ref: Wolfgang Saus)
